March 31 st

I was thrilled to receive an invitation to the 21 st Genesis Awards that took place last week at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Firstly, it's always fun to get dressed up for a red carpet event – even if you have to leave home at 4.00 pm in the afternoon to brave the Saturday freeway traffic!

The Genesis Awards celebrates the media celebrating animals and focusing the spotlight on horrific cruelty that sadly exits and, whether we like it or not, touches our lives on a daily basis.

Take the terrific cruelty that exists when it comes to battery chickens – living in coups so tiny they cannot move – egg machines for human consumption. So it was wonderful to see restaurateur Wolfgang Puck singled out and honored for promising to only use cage-free eggs in all his cooking.

It was wonderful to see footage of brave photographers on board tiny boats challenging Japanese whalers trying to kill whales off the Coast of South Africa and actually standing their ground and turning the ships away saving hundreds of whales. They deserved their award. Not to mention Sir Paul McCartney personally take up the on-going plight of the Canadian seals that are clubbed to death round about this time ever year.

We can't afford to turn a blind eye. I for one will never buy anything other than cage-free eggs ever again and will do whatever it takes to stop puppy mills, seal clubbing and any other cruelty that exists.

We all have a say and it does all add up. I always think of the analogy of a tree with all its leaves. When it loses one leaf, you can't tell the difference, but when at the end of a season, when each tiny leaf has individually fluttered to the ground, we can all see change.

Pick a cause – whatever it is – and support it.

Let's stop the clubbing of seals. Instead let's club together and make a difference…
